October 29, 2015 – Chargers – Pregame

The Ravens are the first team in NFL history to lose 6 of their first 7 games by no more than one score, a distinction that I am sure they would prefer not to hold.  After back to back West Coast road games the Ravens are finally back home this week.  The Bolts come into town boasting the league’s number one offense averaging 430 yards per game along with a league lead in passing at 344 yards per game.  This does not present the best match up for the Ravens who are ranked 25th in defense and 28th against the pass.  In spite of this harsh reality the Ravens have been able to grind out these games and somehow make them 4th quarter contests.  For reasons unknown to me it seems that the Ravens cannot catch a break this year.  In addition to an overall poor performance – they have had setbacks on every level some of which have included: injuries to key players, terrible calls from the refs, fumbles that bounce the wrong way, a horrendous schedule, equipment malfunctions and just overall bad luck.  All this said, you have to put that behind as you prepare for the coming game.  The Ravens are due for some things to break their way, but even if that should happen this week it may not be enough to be beat the high flying offense that Phillip Rivers will bring on Sunday.  To be fair, the Chargers are a pretty weak team as well but I think they have more offensive weapons than the Ravens and they are healthier.  Vegas has the Chargers by 3 which sounds about right.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

November 12, 2015 – Jaguars – Pregame

Seems like forever since the Ravens last played.  After a much needed bye week the Ravens play the Jaguars at home and they really needed this extra time to recover from the injuries and hopefully they will be close to full strength – at least for those players still remaining on the active roster.  Both teams are currently at 2 and 6 and trying to get things on track.  Bortles is putting together a nice season and he is really done a nice job with their passing attack, but they have struggled at times to score points.  The Jags running game is lackluster which has hurt their scoring opportunities.  The Jags have not won a home game since December 1st, 2013 and I for one am hoping that this Sunday is not when they break that streak.  The Ravens will have trouble in the secondary and likely give up a lot of yards but in the end we should prevail at home and get our second win in a row.  I expect the Ravens tight ends to get a lot of targets Sunday and play an integral role in this game.  The Ravens need to be ready to play and they cannot afford to take the Jags lightly as they do have some good talent on this team.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

November 19, 2015 – Rams – Pregame

Sometimes things just don’t go your way and certainly the Ravens 2015 campaign has been with wrought misfortunes.  The Ravens have more players on the injured reserve list than any other team in the NFL and have arguable lost two of their best players on the offensive and defensive side with Smith and Suggs.  Horrible calls by the refs have plagued them all year and most likely cost them two games.  This said, no one outside of Baltimore is going to shed a tear for this team and certainly the Ravens have done very little on their own to overcome these obstacles.  Poor play, questionable play calling, stupid penalties and lots of them have made for a unmemorable season.  The Ravens are now in a situation where they have to grind out the next 7 games in the hopes that they can somehow redeem what has been a disastrous season.  In the upcoming games we are going to see what the Ravens are made of and exactly how much influence our coaching staff has on getting these players to play hard for 60 minutes.  The Rams are coming into town and they are a tough defensive team.  Let’s see how the Ravens respond after what was a bone crushing loss last week.  Will the Ravens play or will they pack it in?   I think they will play and bounce back this week and get a home win.  I do expect it to be close and for the game to be decided late in the 4th quarter.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

December 17, 2015 – Cheifs – Pregame

The Chiefs come into town with a 7 game winning streak and a very good chance of a wild card spot if they can win out their remaining games.  Suffice it to say that they are a hot team that is playing well and they have something to play for coming into the final stretch.  In contrast, the Ravens season has been over for weeks and they are struggling to find able bodies to fill all the positions left open from injuries.  Last week’s casualties included starter Chris Canty who suffered an injury ending pectoral strain.  For the remaining three games the Ravens are going to use a lot of different players at a lot of different positions to see how they perform in game situations.  This trial and experimentation of inexperienced players is likely to produce a lot of mistakes on the field and result in giving up some big plays.  That said, it is the right thing to do at this point in the season.  The talent on this team was exposed last Sunday against the Hawks and the Ravens coaching staff has to see what they have on their roster and more importantly if any of these young players are going to be diamonds in the rough.  Last week the Ravens moved Osemele to tackle and they are talking about putting Webby in the nickel slot and at safety.  Lots of changes to be sure in the final weeks but I don’t expect any of them to produce any wins.  The Ravens have only 11 turnovers in 13 games and there is nothing to believe that this will improve in the remaining games. Additionally, the Ravens offensive line is make shift right now and the running game will continue to struggle which will force a heavy pass game that will surely produce some turnovers.  The odds makers have the Chiefs by 7 ½ and I think that they will cover.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

December 23, 2015 – Steelers – Pregame

This is Steeler’s week in Charm City, but it sure doesn’t feel like it.  The Steelers come into town riding a three game winning streak and they are playing well on both sides of the ball.  Not that the Steelers will need any more motivation to bring their A game to Baltimore, but they do have the increased pressure to win in order to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot.  With the Ravens playing poorly, many fans have given up on the season and I fear their seats as well – so the Steelers will likely have thousands of fans converging on M&T Stadium which will give them a home town feel.  Mark my words folks, the terrible towels will be flying wildly this Sunday.  The Big Ben – Antonio Brown combination is on fire right now and if Antonio can light up the Denver secondary (ranked first in the league) for 189 yards then I think it is safe to assume that he will light up the Ravens secondary.  The Ravens are playing for team pride and they know the importance of this rivalry and I expect we will see a strong effort from these players, but in the end I predict turnovers and stupid penalties will cripple the team’s efforts.  I have been watching this rivalry game for many years now and I can’t ever a recall such a big spread for this game.  To see the Steelers favored by 10 ½ on the road against the Ravens is almost shocking and tells you how far the Ravens have fallen.  This time around the Steelers are the better team, have the talent, and will dominate this one from the start.  The Ravens will need a few Christmas miracles to win this one.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

Congratulations to Sam Koch and Marshall Yanda for their selections to the Pro Bowl – well deserved.

December 30, 2015 – Bengals – Pregame

After a stunning win against the Steelers, the Ravens go into the jungle to take on the Division champs.  The Bengals are in the hunt for a number 2 seed and a playoff bye – and they want this win in a bad way.  The only thing standing in their way are the Ravens. The Bengals really have had the Ravens number in recent years and their defense always presents a lot of challenges for us.  I have no doubts that Mallett is going to have his hands full trying to find time to pass against Dunlap and the Bengals front four.  In other news – this past Monday night AJ McCarron sprained his wrist at the end of the game trying to recover his own fumble.  He is listed day to day but the team hopes and expects that he will be ok to go on Sunday.  As we go into the final game of the 2015 season I thought I would share some team stats and facts that might be a bit of a surprise to some.  Here they are:

  • As measured in yards, the Ravens have the 10th best defense and the 14th ranked offense
  • Statistically the Ravens have the best secondary in the AFC North giving up an average of 239 yards per game
  • The Ravens are ranked 30th in take away differential, dead last in interceptions and tied for 24th in forced fumbles
  • The Ravens are ranked 30th in penalty yards

It just goes to prove to you how important it is to win the turnover battle.  These stats would imply that the Ravens have a decent team on both sides of the ball, but turnovers and penalties take a potentially good team and make them a bottom dweller.

I expect the Ravens to go into Cincinnati and give their best effort.  They would love nothing more than to go in there and end the season on a high note with back to back wins within their division.  My gut tells me that the Ravens wills struggle to run the ball against that Bengals front 7 and I fear that the real Ryan Mallett will likely show up and throw a pick or two.  Personally, I am hoping that the Ravens keep it competitive and give a good showing as they wrap up their season.  Vegas has the Bengals by 7 ½ which I think they will cover.  Enjoy the game and stay thirsty my friends.

September 27, 2015 – Bengals – Recap

Well this one was a nail biter going down to the final minutes of the game but the outcome unfortunately was the same – not enough.  The Ravens, while clearly not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, are for all intents and purposes out of the running.  The loss was a team effort and I will call out some of the obvious weaknesses in my comments below.  Suffice it to say that everyone in the Castle can hit the panic button now – this season is officially the worst start in team history.  This team is lacking in talent and it is now clear to just about everyone that this team does not have the skill positions players to compete against the better teams.  They are going to struggle to get to 8 and 8.  Here is some of the good, the bad and the ugly.

  • Steve Smith is a man!  He is the best thing going for this lackluster team and he plays with heart. 13 catches for 186 yards and 2 TDs – WOW!!
  • 13 Raven penalties for 117 yards in a home game is absolutely inexcusable – you just can’t let that happen
  • Zuttah was a train wreck today and alone accounted for at least 3 penalties
  • Melvin too was a penalty machine early in the game which probably explains why he was MIA for the rest of the game
  • The secondary is healthy with Webb and Smith on the corners but they are not playing well – to be blunt the secondary sucks
  • The safety group was horrible today as well and they never seemed to be in position or provide deep coverage – just awful play from the group
  • The Ravens defense is developing a mojo of having no heart or big play capability in the 4th quarter – they can’t hold lead ever
  • Brandon Williams played well today and looked really stout in the middle
  • Flacco had a big day today but I must admit it is frustrating that he for some reason cannot hit the short passes with any accuracy – he leaves a lot of yardage out there on the field each week with this missed throws
  • The offensive line could not get any push for the run game and were absolutely mauled by the Bengals front 4
  • Campanaro looks good on the punt returns and seems to have good field vision
  • Brown and Aiken are proving to be light weights in the world of NFL receivers and sadly Flacco doesn’t have much to work with right now other than Smith
  • It may be me, but it seems like the Ravens always throw a screen to Kyle Juicebox to start off the game
  • CJ whiffing on Andy Dalton on his slow motion juke is going to get a few views this week in the film room
  • Dumervil forced a turnover on his sack of Dalton, but other than that he was completely unremarkable today
  • Jimmy’s pick in the end zone was critical to keeping the Ravens in that game otherwise it might have been a rout
  • The officiating of pass interference is so confusing I can no longer figure it out – illegal contact, holding and PI seem to be used randomly and interchangeably
  • Monroe gets knocked out in the first series in Denver with a concussion and has missed everything since – what the hell happened?  Did he hit steel beam?
  • Does anyone who watches the Ravens actually think we can get 4 yards running on 3rd and 4?  I think they tried it twice and failed miserably
  • Mosley’s fumble recovery and return were a thing of beauty
  • Suggs is sorely missed and the pass rush is nonexistent unless they send at least 6
  • Do you think Antonio Brown is licking his chops thinking about Thursday’s game
  • I vote that Jason Babin get a chance to put on a jersey this week – he can’t be any worse than the current talent

September 20, 2015 – Raiders – Recap

The Ravens are 0 – 2 and there isn’t any way to sugar coat this one – they got beat by a pretty bad team which has to make you shutter a bit.  It isn’t time to hit the panic button yet, but it might not be a bad idea to make sure that you are in arm’s length  of it.  This was a disappointing loss on many levels.  When you score 33 points on the road you should win that game. I am putting this one on the defense as they could not do anything to stop Carr and the Oakland offense.  I am guessing that most people had this game as one of the 2 or 3 road wins that the Ravens win.  Not sure how much difference Suggs would have made in this game but it does make you wonder. Playing as they are the Ravens will have a difficult time beating their rivals in the AFC North.  Other random thoughts on the game

  • 10 penalties for 109 yards is bad news – Jernigan’s late hit on Carr was stupid and Kelechi had a few penalties on his own
  • Ravens tackling was awful! Too much arm tackling, outright whiffs, and bad angles on pursuit
  • Jimmy getting burned by Amari in the opening minutes set the tone for the day
  • Oakland was 9 of 14 on third down, you would have thought you were playing the Patriots
  • Crocket looked great in the open field and was one of the bright spots for the offense
  • Albert McClellan didn’t set the edge and gave up a QB sweep for 24 yards – Do your job Albert!
  • Except for the fumble on the first play of offense – Aiken looked ok today
  • To me CJ and Daryl had a really bad day controlling the middle of the field and could not pass defend
  • Webby when he is bad he is really bad – don’t be surprised if Melvin replaces him if this subpar play continues
  • The offensive line was adequate today but I would not describe them as dominant  – they don’t get any push in the run game
  • Lorenzo was a nice surprise today and I like how he runs with his pads down – bet we see more carries from him going forward
  • Davis and Williams were very quiet today and did not do muck, surprisingly Guy looked better than them
  • Absolutely no pass rush today (no sacks from front 4) and Pees had no answer or adjustments that worked to put pressure
  • Clock management was suspect at the end of the game and as we all know this is not one of Harbaugh’s strengths
  • Flacco had a strong day with 71 completion % and 384 yards, but he did leave a few plays on the field
  • Dumervil looked old and tired today, and Za’Darius did not look like much of a factor
  • Ravens look to me like they get sloppy in the red zone, they need to get better
  • Secondary as it stands now is likely going to finish in the bottom 10 if something doesn’t change

October 2, 2015 – Steelers – Recap

Ravens pull off a minor miracle in beating the Steelers in Pittsburgh in overtime.  Just when you thought all was lost Flacco with seconds left in the game moves down the field to get within field goal range to tie the game.  Then in OT – The Ravens proved last night that if you have a pro bowl kicker and great punter you have the clear advantage in these close games.  I saw something last night I had not seen before, and that was the look of fear and worry in Mike Tomlin’s eyes.  Seriously, I have never seen him look so nervous on the sidelines.  Tomlin did not have his best night coaching and his two failed 4th down attempts hurt them, especially when he passed up an opportunity to win the game with a field goal.  In my opinion, even with the misses, you have to send Scobee out there to win it.  So glad that Tomlin flinched and went for the first down.  Other observations on the game below:

  • Flacco had a rough night with an INT, fumble, missed snap and myriad of dud throws on short routes, BUT came through in the 11th hour
  • I love Campanaro and his TD run was brilliant – I just wish he could play for more than 5 minutes without getting injured.  Opinion – short career
  • Brandon Williams is having an amazing year – he is flat out disruptive in the middle and maybe the best talent on that defense
  • The defensive veterans played very well last night – both Dumervil and Daryl Smith were physical and active all night long – led the team in tackles
  • Will Hill showed a glimpse of his potential last night with some very good open field tackles – let’s hope that this solid play continues
  • Marlon Brown sucks (drops and T-Rex arms) and it would not surprise me if he moves down in the depth chart – Now Aiken looked pretty good
  • Tucker 3 for 3 (40, 42 & 52) in a tough stadium, Koch 4 punts with a 51 yard average – Special Teams are so important in these close games
  • The Ravens 4 sacks while promising is misleading because at least three of them were coverage sacks – Vick had plenty of time to throw last night
  • Best defensive play of the night was Wagner’s open field tackle on Cockrell on his interception
  • I was ok with the fake FG call, I just didn’t like personnel that they used to make it happen – the whole play (including Boyle) looked like it was in slo mo
  • I like Kyle Juicebox, but seriously he has to know better – his late hit on kick off was just flat out horrible and probably cost us 3 points
  • The Ravens pass protection needs to do a much better job with responding to the blitz packages – too many guys coming in untouched
  • Lawrence Timmons had an incredible game last night and appeared to be in every pile – he recorded 10 tackles and 1 assists – wow!
  • I know it was Vick playing – but holding Antonio to 42 yards is something to be proud
  • It is amazing how much better the Ravens look when the run the ball effectively – albeit the Steelers are not that stout on defense
  • I absolutely hate that the Ravens cannot get 2 yards running on three attempts in close situations – so frustrating
  • Often you see teams in the NFL have linemen or RBs push a short run attempt from behind to get them the extra yardage, but I never see the Ravens do that
  • The secondary looked so much better last night and I am hope they can build on that
  • This Boyle kid looks tough and given that he is 3rd on the depth chart you have to like our future with the tight end group
  • Winning a game when Smith had only 24 yards on the night is remarkable and a good sign – because teams are going to try to neutralize him

  • Play clean football and avoid untimely penalties Correct, and the Steelers did not get key first downs by Ravens penalties

November 1, 2015 – Chargers – Recap

The Ravens finally get a win and find a way to prevail in the final minutes.  When Rivers got the ball with 4 ½ minutes left and started to moving down the field with great ease – I had that sick feeling in my stomach that we were going to give up 7 points and then flounder with the ball with the remaining time.  But the defense while not stellar found a way to keep them to just 3 points and the Ravens were fortunate to have enough time to get down the field for a field goal.  So happy that the Ravens got a win going into the bye week  and the break comes at a good time to let these guys rest and to get time to heal.  Sadly today, we have lost Steve Smith for the season and that is going to be a tough one to overcome.  The one positive though is you get a chance to see these other receivers and you will get a better feel for what you have left.  Other thoughts on the game are below:

  • Ravens special teams was outstanding today – Sam punted over 60 yards per/Tucker flawless/Coverage solid/blocked FG attempt  = GAME BALL
  • Flacco had a good game (25 of 37) and made some beautiful throws and fortunately didn’t throw a pick today
  • Can somebody help explain to me how it is that we ran just 6 times in the first half of the game against the 31st ranked run defense
  • The O Line did a pretty good job protecting Joe today but they really lacked any push in the run game for the most part
  • Aiken looks to be the new go to guy now that Smith is out, oh and Marlon Brown (saying it again) is a wasted roster spot but glad that he hardly played today
  • Our pass rush is so bad and to think that the Chargers had so many replacements on their O line makes it even more pathetic
  • I know our secondary is bad, but seriously there are so many passes caught across the middle of the field that are not contested it makes you wonder
  • Kyle Arrington is really awful, not sure what his PFF score will be this week – but he may have a career low score
  • The PI call on Webby was horrible call – so glad the Ravens fans booed for 5 minutes straight
  • The PF call on Will Hill for playing football was a joke too
  • The Ravens defense is desperately lacking team speed and it shows up almost every week when you watch these other teams run by us
  • I hope Zuttah is not seriously hurt, because John Urschel snaps the ball like a little girl
  • Will Hill and Kendrick Lewis are always good for giving up a big play – 3rd and 10 and they leave Floyd wide open for a 70 yard bomb
  • John Harbaugh’s challenge of the pass to Crocket was a real head scratcher
  • Hurst got man handled today and really struggled in his protection for most of the game
  • When Webby is on his game he is, in spite of being small, one of the better open field tacklers on the team
  • Our defense is not covering or accounting for RBs coming out of the backfield – so frustrating see teams get such easy yardage and often 1st downs
  • Getting the first down on 4th and 2 was a huge play for the Ravens an ultimately got them 7 points
  • Officiating in the NFL this year has been really poor, and unfortunately for the Ravens they have had some of the worst of it

Possible Monday morning headlines in the Sun Papers

  • Ravens lose another one in the final minutes
  • Secondary falters again in home loss

Keys to the Game

  • Pressure Rivers and get him off his spot and out of rhythm Nope, one sack all day and for the most part he had time
  • Dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides Nope, the Ravens could not run for most of the game
  • For the love of God generate a turnover Nope, another 4 quarters without a turnover
